Why We Celebrate Halloween

January 14th, 2009

Someone posed a question the other day – "Why do we celebrate Halloween?"  Needless to say the answers were many and vaired most revolving around chocolate and costumes, which is what halloween has come to mean to many peoeple nowadays.

One answer put forward that it began in Ireland and then spread to the US where it has become a huge holiday but it’s true origins lie much further back.  Hallowe’en, or Samhein, is based on a pagan belief and is the night when the veil between the worlds is at it’s thinnest.  A night when the dead can revisit there former home.  It was a night when people left gifts of food for their ancestors  and trod carefully in order not to offend the less than kindly otherworldly visitors that might be around.  I suspect that many of those who visit are ctually not quite so scary and merely want to see what is going on!

There are many different beliefs about Hallowe’en and it’s equivalent festival in other cultures, what matters most is that we honor the traditions of each culture.

Choosing Halloween Party Games

October 28th, 2008

It really is the last minute now, only three more sleeps!  Costumes are prepared, decorations are up and I am just putting the finishing touches to our Halloween Menu.  Pumpkin Soup and Witches Wart Muffins feature heavily, along with Slime Pie, an old family favorite.  Last thing to do is make a final choice on games for after Supper.

We have gone with Monster Match, Midnight Mystery and then for the little ones Pin The Tail On The Cat.   We are also going to have a Treasure Hunt with lots of gruesome prizes, suitable for the occasion.  I plan to hide some of the clues in Super Slime, but don’t tell or they will solve the puzzles too quickly!  I have some wonderful surprise packages with lots of Jellied Eyeballs, Toasted Toes and Fried Fingers with extra crispy nails for those who solve the clues fastest! I shall be making sure that there is plenty of Super slime around as well

We’ll choose some more games later, which ones will you have…..

Last Minute Halloween Costumes

October 26th, 2008

If you haven’t made the decision about which Halloween Costume to get, you don’t have much time left.  We are on a countdown now, only 5 more sleeps as one of the little Slimes informed me today!  There is till time to find something different without spending a fortune so I’ve put a few here for you to look at to get some inspiration.  I’ve chosen mine,  you can see it here but some of the family are still dithering…   I suspect Mr Slime, Sylvester to his friends, is going to go for The Joker, which is seriously scary or perhaps the Boogeyman Night Terror.  I did rather think he might go for something more dashing like The Bandido,  which would go well with my costume, but he is a traditional ghoul at heart and does like to go for the scarier costumes…..

It’s getting so close now – I am getting so excited I can scarcely breathe!  We’ve been plotting and planning so much much over the last few months.  I’m down to sorting out my last few Halloween funny decorations now so I thought I’d share some of the ones I really like.  It might inspire you if you are having problems deciding what to do.  I like the Graveyard Kit and the Hanging Skeleton  Bride is a must in this house.  What are you going to choose, do tell…..

Halloween Party Games

October 23rd, 2008

It’s getting close now to the big night, so final plans need to be made for Halloween Party Games ready for when the kids get back from their collecting spree. I always think that a few gentle games are a good idea – all that sugar in their systems can cause mayhem otherwise.

The best games we have ever had came in the form of Fun Halloween Games which you can just download and print out as often as you want. You can even personalize them for your party guests. I just hate the waste the of buying loads of stuff that doesn’t get used, and these games mean you only print what you want so you are not paying  for stuff you don’t need.

My personal favorite game is Most Popular Halloween Games because the kids really get into the part when they are already dressed up, I like some of the Harvest games too.  Best reason of all for getting these though, is that they are quick and easy to sort out when you are up to your eyes in Halloween Party preparations!

Halloween Plus Size Glamor

October 21st, 2008

glamor plus size halloween costumeThe choice is made – I am going all out for glamor this year. There is absolutely no reason why Halloween plus size costumes can’t be as glamorous as they come, and this one pretty well fits the bill.

This is just fabulous, and I can’t wait to wear it.  Although it’s referred to as The Devil’s Temptress I think it has a great deal of scope to be used in many different ways.  The Costume features a full length gown with lace details and stand-up collar in the most gorgeous shade of red.  There is a  lace petticoat and  jeweled teardrop choker so you feel absolutely drop dead gorgeous when you wear it.  There are very cute little horns included with it as well, but if you chose not to wear those and used some fangs instead, you would be a luscious vampiress – the guys would be lining up to be bitten if you were wearing this! I found this one at Costume Discounters where they have loads of stunning costumes at really good prices.

Some dresses make you feel so good that you feel you could take on the world and win, and this is one of those.  The fabric feels so rich and luxurious, I felt like I had grown six inches taller when I put it on.  All I can say is – roll on Halloween, I’m ready!

The Best Halloween Pet Costumes

October 20th, 2008

Costumes for Pets - ZELDA DEVIL PET SMALLHalloween is definitely a time for dressing up in all sorts of Halloween Funny Costumes, and I don’t see why we should leave out pets out either.  To be fair, not all pets enjoy being dressed up and you shouldn’t do anything that will cause them any distress.   I told you all about the fantastic Pet Bird Halloween Costumes the other day,  so I thought I’d pick out a few special ones for the dogs and cats this time.

The  Devil Dog Halloween Costume is rather fetching I think, and you can get it all different sizes for whatever your breed of dog.  It comes with a cape, lovely scalloped collar and a headpiece too.  Cat From Hell Pet Costume

There aren’t a great many cat costumes around but I was very taken by the Cat From Hell Halloween Costume It gives your cat an air of real, regal devilish elegance.  It comes with a red cape and matching red horns. Purr-fect for your feline friend or even an extra small dog.  Even my rough and tumble cat, Cauldron,  will look good in this.

Pumpkin Patch Pooch Pet Costume I’m not so sure about this one, but if it’s going to be a cool night, this will keep your dog warm and cosy.  The Pumpkin Patch Dog Costume is certainly different.  It includes an orange body suit with green leaves around the collar, and a matching orange hat with green leaves that velcros under the neck.  You would have to have a very compliant dog to wear this costume but it’s very fetching.

Whatever you do at Halloween do remember to keep your pets safe and not cause them any distress.  You can find  Halloween Pet Safety Guidelines by Clicking Here

The Scariest Halloween Costume

October 18th, 2008

The Joker Deluxe Adult CostumeTo my mind this is the scariest Halloween costume of them all this year.  I don’t know if you have seen the movie, Dark Knight, yet – if not you should.  It was seriously scary and I really wished I had a sofa to hide behind at times!  I think this costume is going to be one of the hits of the year – and you can get it in every size from tiny child right through to plus size.  This particular version is The Joker Deluxe Adult Costume and is very reasonably priced.   This  includes  a jacket with attached shirt, tie and vest, pants and mask. The Joker Dog Costume

What really amused me as well is that you can even get this costume for your Dog!  The Joker Dog Costume is only a few dollars and just imagine the impact you will have as the pair of you stroll down the street!  It’s an officially licensed item so you know it’s going to look good.  I think this is just the best and the scariest Halloween costume you can get
