Keep Your Pets Safe At Halloween

September 20th, 2008
Every year at holiday times pets can be very stressed or even hurt by some of the things that go on.  Funny Halloween Pranks can be dangerous and upsetting for your pets so you should follow the guidelines laid down by the ASPCA to make sure they are safe and happy.
Costumes for Pets - PET , WITCH
  • All but the most social of dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room during peak trick-or-treat visiting hours. Too many strangers in unusual garb can be scary and stressful for pets.
  • Small caged pets should be put into a quiet room if you are having a party
  • When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, make sure your dog or cat doesn’t slip out.  Check they are wearing ID tags just in case.  If they are frightened they may travel a long way.
  • No tricks or treats: Keep all Halloween candy out of  pet’s reach. Chocolate can be poisonous to animals, and tinfoil and cellophane candy wrappers can be fatal if swallowed.
  • Don’t have lit pumpkin lanterns or candles around your pets.  An excited animal can knock them over, get burned or even start a fire.
  • Don’t leave your pets outside in the yard or the garden on Halloween. Sadly there are some people out there who might think it is funny to tease them, or worse - it’s not and if you see someone doing so, please contact the authorities.
  • Animal protection corganisations recommends that cats are kept inside for several days before and after Halloween. Black cats in particular may be at risk from children’s pranks or even deliberate cruelty.
  • Don’t put your pet in a costume unless you know they are comfortable with it. If you decide to do so, make sure the costume isn’t unsafe, and doesn’t restrict movement, vision, hearing or breathing. Avoid costumes with small or dangling accessories that could be chewed or pulled off and possibly be a choking hazard. Make sure an adult supervises pets in costume at all times.
